A critical piece for the development of tsunami simulations for a particular location are the Digital Elevation Models of the area. These models combine bathymetry and topography data to generate a representation of the basin where the wave will get propagated.

In April 2016 we were lucky to have a DEM workshop taught by Kelly Carignan and Matthew Love, from NOAA-NCEI. They trained a total of 10 people from our province (see list below) from Department of Fisheries and Oceans, GeoBC, Ocean Networks Canada, the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District and The University of Victoria.

Here you can see the notes from the workshop that can help you recreate the process for other areas. Please, feel free to contact if you have complementary notes that you would like us to add to this page or any corrections.

The intention of this page is to be an open forum, so that you can ask the people in it about particular questions that you may have for the generation of DEM for other areas.

List of participants in the DEM workshop:

  • Lori Wilson - ACRD
  • Anne Ballantyne - DFO
  • Neil Dangerfield - DFO
  • Peter Wills - DFO
  • Aaron McMillan - GeoBC
  • Azadeh Ramesh - GeoBC
  • Nazma Panjwani - UVic
