Underwater Video Discussion

Currently, NEPTUNE Canada provides two tools for working with underwater video, the Dive Viewer and our Camera Control Interface. Improvements to these interfaces are going to be demoed at the workshop, and we are interested in your reactions and suggestions.

Some Improvement Ideas

Which of the following are interesting and important to you?

Dive Viewer a.k.a. "SeaTube"

We've discussed the following improvements, which would expand the ROPOS Dive Viewer into an more general video viewer. These changes imply we should rename this tool. Our working name is "SeaTube", but we're open to suggestions (post a comment below).

  • Improved video player (full timeline slider, slow-motion, step-frames, fast-forward)
  • Include fixed camera and Wally the Crawler video
  • Camera position & location information
  • HD video
  • Search for video by area, time, instrument
  • High-resolution frame grabs
  • Ability to select clips and create your own videos from them
  • Better annotation
  • Ability to pause and play live video

Camera Control Interface a.k.a. "SeaCam"

We've discussed the following improvements to the camera control interface. Our working name is "SeaCam", but we're open to suggestions (post a comment below).

  • Two types of user, "Operator" and "Observer"
  • Ability to create preset camera positions (and settings) and move camera directly to them
  • Chat window (what are your thoughts on this?)
  • Automated observation (camera moves automatically to a series of preset positions
  • Recording of camera control commands to create automated observation macros
  • Ability to schedule automated camera sessions
