The above list includes suggestions of future initiatives derived from a) highly rated proposals that could not be funded in the initial suite of instruments, and b) proposals that have been raised in the interim and/or emerging issues.
ocean acidification - pH, CO2, DIC??
ocean hypoxia
plate tectonics-Nootka fracture, Pacific Plate...
processes on a sediment-buried spreading ridge
T-phase experiments
deep water circulation
abyssal plain benthic ecology - additional pods
ecology of outcrops in abyssal plains
circulation near outcrops on abyssal plains
organism/sediment interaction - pressure changes with bioturbation
fish tracking (OTN)
Additional suggestions that came up during the workshop are:
experimental oceanography - opportunities for manipulation, interaction
cold water corals
more hydrophones - seismic/earthquake location, whales, sediment transport...
canyons as conduits to deep ocean, submarine fan processes
robotics - AUV's, gliders, sample collection, release experimental treatments, mobile platforms to move sensors
buoys
expand single point measurements to arrays
chemical measurements
temperature across environments in the ridge valley
accoustic modems
multidimensional data visualization/analysis tools

Further comments from future thinking:
Greater integration across NC and VENUS?
Greater formally recognized and supported collaboration with DFO, NRCan, NOAA, OOI, USGS...
