Discussion of Existing Experiments

discussion of sites for instruments at MEF: a possible small smoker on south or southeast side of Grotto near marker G was suggested as a plausible target for all MEF experiments.  There will need to be a survey to determine if the orifice is big enough for Marv Lilley's resistivity probe. There is also not as vigorous diffuse flow surrounding this smoker as on other parts of Grotto. An image  of the small smoker is available on ALVIN data logger: dive 4523, image at 17:27:25 on 6/22/09 (SubSea2.20090622_172725.jpg). No clear alternatives discussed.  Marv will check out sites for the resistivity probe during his July cruise, but additional surveying may be need to site COVIS appropriately to map the diffuse flow region around the other instruments.

We also discussed the order of instrument placement:  ROPOS will need room to install some instruments (especially RAS) and will need to avoid entranglement with others (especially COVIS).

Discussion of sites for instruments at Mothra: Marv needs to review available video and survey in his July cruise.  There may only be the resistivity probe and a short-period seismometer.

Discussion of sites for seismometers: Especially north of High Rise, we need to know more about the substrate (basalt or sediment, rough lava or smooth, etc) and possibly topography.

Interactions/conflicts between instruments

The current data from moorings is important for analysis of data from other instruments.  A current meter local to the MEF instruments would greatly enhance the science there.

triggering of water sampling (RAS)

  • initially manual but ...
  • possible to trigger based on TEMPO MINI temperature, resistivity probe temperature, or seismic event; might also trigger manually;
  • intake of Raz to be attached to TEMPO-MINI intake because want to sample same water event detection

general discussion of triggering

  • most want to know if seismic event -- several instruments would want to start sampling but how much, how long depends on whether see anything
  • possible want to know if temperature change detected or current or ....
    • black smoker temperature usually constant so small change significant
    • diffuse temperature varies with tidal cycle so need a more sophisticated filter to detect events

Scheduling to minimize interference

TEMPO-MINI camera and the NEPTUNE camera will need to coordinate to minimize light usage.  Many in the Endeavour group felt the 1 hour per day light limit was unneccessary at Endeavour as there are unlikely to be any animals affected by the light.  Perhaps this should be discussed or tested.

DMAS: data formats, download/presentations needs

RAS - no data until recovery (will send spreadsheet of chemistry later)

COVIS - will provide software; images of plume initially; later will have vertical velocity estimates, entrainment rates, plume bending, and diffuse flow maps

TEMPO-MINI - oxygen and temperature right away; Fe requires calibration period during which spectra will be provided (not clear if always sending spectra but can process to Fe conc after calibration)

Resistivity probe - 5 voltages, will provide algorithms to turn into temperature (2 values), resistivity or conductivity, eH, and hydrogen; the resistivity part will have to wait for water samples to be brought back to shore for analysis after installation cruise

Obstacles

A current meter at MEF would greatly enhance the interpretation of data.

More sensors are needed!  In particular, adding a number of thermistors at MEF would be helpful.  A suggestion of using an acoustic modem placed on the junction box was suggested.
