The Acoustics working group comprises both passive and active acoustics. Passive acoustics makes use mainly of the hydrophones deployed at all major site of Ocean Networks Canada's observatories, listening to sounds from animals, machines, and also natural events such as earthquakes and underwater turbidity. Active acoustics records its own signals to scan the environment, e.g. using backscatter signals to see biomass in the water column, determine water flow and structures.
